A newly graduated and certified CNM who has full prescriptive practice privileges is seeing a new patient for an annual exam. During the exam, the patient mentions that she “hasn’t felt like herself lately”. Upon further questioning, the CNM discovers that she has been going long periods of time without sleep, is acting promiscuously and has been spending a lot of money- all of which are unusual for her. She was just released from jail after receiving her first DUI the night before. The CNM recognizes that this is not normal behavior and offers to prescribe something to help the patient “calm down”. After shared decision making, the CNM prescribes a sedative for the patient. This plan of action: Group of answer choices is inappropriate because the CNM is acting outside of her scope of practice. puts the CNM at risk for criminal liability. is appropriate because the CNM has full prescriptive privileges.
