We learned this week that the heart is a double-sided pump. Each side has its responsibilities. We also studied this week how the blood flows throughout the heart. Read and answer the question below: Your 60-year-old aunt has been diagnosed with heart failure. You know from your studies that this is a chronic condition when the heart muscle (the myocardium) is no longer able to meet the demands placed on it by the body. Your aunt is now complaining of increasing shortness of breath especially when doing simple daily activities. She finds elevating her head at night is better. During the initial examination, the nurse notices her ankles and feet are swollen, but does not go as high as her knees, she has venous distension in the neck which is mild, no hepatic congestion or ascites but does have course rales of the lungs, indicative of congestion. Is this an example of left-sided heart failure or right-sided heart failure? Why?
