The top risk factor associated with HAPIs is immobility. For patients requiring intubation, and the use of a ventilator, sedation is often used to prevent inadequate ventilation and reduce harm for a patient in a critical state of health. The administration of sedative medications often results in immobility. The inability for a patient to redistribute pressure throughout their body can cause internal tissue deformation, irreversible tissue damage, and tissue ischemia that causes pressure injuries (Sousa et al., 2020). Many ICUs take the initiative to prevent pressure injuries by implementing interventions that can help to reduce the prevalence of HAPIs. Recently, one of those interventions is the use of Z-Flo pillows. or similar fluidized type pillows. Evidence supporting the use of this intervention can help to facilitate best practice interventions within medical organizations to reduce HAPIs for this patient population in the ICU setting.
