Some biases, stigmas, and barriers to healthcare have improved, but there is still much work to ensure access to quality healthcare for all citizens. “Documented health disparities for people with disabilities include poorer access to health care services, experiences of discrimination, lower health insurance rates, poorer access to medications, and delaying or being unable to obtain care compared with people without disabilities” (Lamba et al., 2023). If a person with a disability also happens to be an ethnic minority or part of the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trangendered or Queer (LGBTQ) community, the disparities they face are multiplied. The mental health community also continues to battle stigma and bias as a barrier to healthcare. There have been some improvements, but continued work is needed to ensure healthcare equity. “For example, Black-White mortality rate-ratios improved significantly for women from 1960-2000, but this was offset by a worsening of inequalities in health outcomes among men,” (Rust et al., 2012).
