Acute otitis media is defined by a period of three weeks, within which there has been signs and symptoms of acute inflammation in the middle ear. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released guidelines that enable physicians to manage uncomplicated acute otitis media among children aged five to twelve years. The guidelines propose that physicians managing acute otitis media should add pain evaluation and treatment as part of acute otitis media management. Children aged at least six months presenting with severe signs and symptoms of either unilateral or bilateral acute otitis media should be prescribed antibiotics. Antibiotics should also be prescribed to children aged six to twenty-three months presenting with nonsevere bilateral acute otitis media. Unilateral nonsevere acute otitis media in children aged 6-23 months or older children can be managed without the use of antibiotics but by close monitoring ( watch and wait) of the child ( AMERICAN, A. C. A. D. E. M. Y. O. F. P. E. D. I. A. T. R. I. C. S. 2018).
