Osteoporosis occurs when the bones in someone’s body start to become less dense, more porous, and fragile. When this occurs, it can be very easy to break a bone from a fall, a trip, and more. This is why it tends to be so serious when an elderly person falls. For us, we may have a bruise, but we can usually get right back up. If an 80-year-old woman with osteoporosis falls, she could snap the femoral neck of the femur and break her hip. Osteoporosis in the spine is extremely dangerous. It can make your spine frail and brittle, and if you fall just a little too hard, a vertebra could snap and leave you paralyzed. Scoliosis on the other hand tends to be a curvature in the spine that is usually noticed in early adolescents. I am sure many of us remember middle school or adolescent primary care scoliosis screenings as children. A nurse or doctor would tell us to put our hands above our head with our palms together, and slowly bend over and touch our toes. The nurse or doctor will stand behind you and watch your spine and look for any potential irregular curvature. Sometimes
