Tonya is a 17-year old Asian American Female who is coming into to outpatient services to receive treatment for reported eating disorder behavior. She lives with her parents and younger brother. Tonya has recently lost a lot of weight and her parents are concerned for her. Her doctor recommended a local outpatient clinic for treatment. During the intake session, she shares with the staff member specific details about her eating disorder behaviors. Tonya reports that she started dieting the summer before she started high school. She recalls a specific event that made her more aware of her weight – she reports that her and her friends were getting ready to go to the public pool, when one of her friends told her that her “stomach was pooching out” and that she should “suck it in”. Tonya began weighing herself before and after every meal, recording her weight in a diet diary three times a day, and restricting food intake to two meals a day, but only vegetables. She told her parents she was a vegetarian now. She reports trying many different diet products that she would steal from grocery stores – including diet pills and laxatives.
