You are a registered nurse working a night shift on a 5 bed medical unit in a small rural hospital in Northern Ontario. You are told that there is a 78 year old female client in Emerg who may be transferred to your unit. You find out she is on a Form 1 as she was negating to attend to her self-care at home. Other symptoms include: feeling confused, c/o feeling hot one moment and cold the next and irritability. Her daughter calls to tell the staff “she has been on some sort of psychiatric medication in the past and I know she takes something for sleep.” You are the nurse working with this client upon transfer from Emerg. What are your questions? What do you know and what do you need to know? What possible classifications of psychiatric drugs or otherwise would you suspect she may have taken?
