We as nurses practice theseprinciples when addressing the right to life by prioritizing patient autonomy and informed decision-making. The patient should always be at the center of their care. This includes respecting the patient’s wishes regarding end-of-life care, discussing treatment options thoroughly, and ensuring that interventions align with the patient’s values and goals. We must also prioritize their values, customs and beliefs but performing an initial assessment at the start of their care, which helps to guide them to their decision making. Nurses must always advocate for patients regardless of their own beliefs while remaining unbiased. This is a controversial issue as not all are treated properly and fairly. A good example at the moment would be the disparity amongst black women in maternal health. This is unfortunate and we must work harder in finding solutions to change the outcomes for black mothers. They too should receive quality healthcare and their voices should be heard.
