CASE STUDY:
Roberta Miller is the nurse manager of a 15-bed progressive care unit (PCU) at the Midwestern State Community Hospital. The hospital’s administration has decided to downsize and the PCU is moving to the Telemetry floor that currently has 35 beds. It is estimated that in 6 months the transition must be completed.
Roberta has been informed that the current Nurse Manager of the telemetry unit will remain the administrative leader for the floor. Roberta’s position will no longer exist and Roberta has been offered another position in Quality Improvement department as the manager.
Roberta’s staff nurses are very supportive and loyal to her and are angry about their transition to the Telemetry floor and many of them have requested transfers to other floors.
For several years the Telemetry floor, under the current Nurse Manager, has had very high staff nurse turnover rates and an even higher usage of agency and travel nurses to meet the needs of the unit. The administration believes the transition of the PCU onto the telemetry floor will lead to a more stable nursing staff for the larger unit.
The morale on Roberta’s unit continues to deteriorate, and Roberta is worried that patient care will be affected and family members may hear negative discussions that have increased in recent weeks. There also has been increased “call-outs” by the staff nurses.
Roberta is concerned about the next 6 months with these issues that are seemingly getting worse by the day. She wants to leave this position and close the PCU on a positive note.

Using these resources, identify theories to support the analysis for the solution to the issue in the case study. Identify and discuss the leadership style, strengths and competencies needed to foster a positive and safe work environment for the staff, patients and family. Discuss 2 different styles and how each style of leader would manage the challenges faced in the case study.
