IntroductionÂ
Â
Critical thinking is an invaluable skill that is used in everyday life. It requires an individual to make decisions, assumptions, and conclusions by carefully evaluating performance, and reconstructing ideas and situations. Critical thinking encourages us to use our thinking caps and question everything, from past and present, to solve a problem. It also necessitates a commitment to high standards of excellence and a thorough understanding of how to apply them. As a critical thinker, there are many things that I can work on improving. These include being able to differentiate between information and understanding, taking criticism constructively, and focusing on attention to detail.
Knowing Information and Understanding
My first barrier that I have is mistaking information for understanding (Cottrell, 2017, p.12). I do a thing where I memorize facts and answers instead of learning the skill taught to me. I realized that will not help me make critical thinking judgements for myself. To improve on that my priority is to take the skills and information taught to me and divide them into smaller, and easier task. Doing so will help enhance my productivity and stay focused, along with keeping me organized. As a strategy, I plan to engage in self-education to gain more knowledge on the issue at hand. This way, I can gain a deeper understanding of the material instead of memorizing it temporarily.

Understanding Constructive Criticism
My second barrier that I have is misunderstanding what is meant by criticism (Cottrell, 2017, p.10). I am a sensitive person so when I hear criticism, I take it in a negative way instead of seeing it as a way of correcting me on my mistakes. Receiving Criticism is getting feedback of your work or performance on a skill to help better improve your way of doing it. A priority of mine is to be able to undertake good critical reflection for my assignment and my job. I work in an emergency department and one thing that can help me is hearing other people’s perspective on things that I may have overlooked, without taking it personal. A strategy to help me is focusing on what is required for an activity in order to remain effective, efficient, and successful. When I receive criticism, like discussed earlier, it is to benefit me in performing my task. For example, if someone gives me constructive criticism on a task/order for my patient, I need to learn from the criticism and focus it on that task to help better the patient and myself without taking it to a personal level.Â
Focusing on attention to detailÂ
My third barrier is insufficient focus to attention and detail (Cottrell, 2017, p. 12). A big thing I need to improve on is paying more attention to detail. People who pay attention to detail get it right on the first try, because they also review their work to see what details they missed from the beginning. To improve this, I will prioritize picking out key points from background information. This with help focus on the main picture and help correct mistakes made along the way. Additionally, I will strategize demonstrating a thorough concern for all the areas involved, no matter how small, in a skill. This will benefit me in finding more information, while organizing time and resources given, efficiently.Â
Conclusion
Critical thinking plays a huge role in my nursing career path. Developing a plan on how to improve my critical thinking skills is necessary for that. This plan has and will continue to help me, learn my skills instead of memorizing, take constructive criticism to better my judgment, and pay attention to details along with reviewing them. Understanding how to learn from others and take their criticism will benefit not only me but my patients as well. Learning about critical thinking will not just improve my judgment and view on things, but also make it worth it in the end.Â
