The strategies you could implement are being present with the patient and, potentially, therapeutic touch. The patient has stated that he does not want to talk, so the nurse could tell him that they don’t have to talk but that they are just there to spend time with him. Also, the nurse could start developing a therapeutic relationship by spending only short periods of time with the patient and letting them know when those times will be (Pollard, 2023). This may help the patient develop trust with the nurse because he knows that the nurse will be coming to check in at the pre-determined times and, if the nurse actually does check in during those times, it will show the patient the nurse is reliable and true to her word. Therapeutic touch can be helpful, if indicated, to develop therapeutic relationship through non-verbal cues to demonstrate compassion and caring. Other strategies that could be implemented are active listening when the patient is ready to talk, sharing observations, and the use of humor (Jakubec & Astle, 2019).
