Short staffing and a cut in personal protective equipment are two huge sources of work-related stress for a nurse (Holman et al., 2021). This double whammy for any nursing manager who is already probably experiencing burnout could set them over the edge. Upon hearing this news from the hospital, competing might look like trying to get our floor’s needs met first, saying something like, “Well, my tower has the most critically ill patients after the ICU and we need our protective equipment to be considered and replenished first, definitely before Tower 3’s!” Cooperating in this situation might look like taking the fade and hoping for the best without asserting the genuine concern and problem of being short staffed and limited equipment, saying something like, “Ok, I guess we can figure it out as we go and just do our best to meet our patient’s needs.”
