On very, very rare occasions, Dr. Desoto Niebuhr lies to his patients. He does this only when he sees that doing so will cause no harm and will in fact result in more good than telling the truth would. For instance, one patient, Mr. Drysdale, often asks for medications that simply won’t in any way be helpful for his condition. Dr. Niebuhr finally decided to give Mr. Drysdale a placebo and told him this was the medication he’d been requesting. Mr. Drysdale was quite pleased and took the medication daily as prescribed. Dr. Niebuhr reasoned that since the patient was happy, and the placebo kept the patient from pestering him — which allows him to spend more time with other patients — much more overall good resulted from the lie than would have followed from being truthful with Mr. Drysdale. QUESTION 6 of 8 Which theory best aligns with Dr. Niebuhr’s moral reasoning?
