Yousef Abdul is a 61 year old man with severe intraoperative bleeding during a partial hepatectomy being performed in a major metropolitan hospital. He is coagulopathic (with PT 20 sec (11-14), APTT 45 sec (29-34), fibrinogen 1.4 g/L (2.0-4.0) and platelets 85 x 109/L). Blood components are available on site and fresh frozen plasma (FFP), platelets and cryoprecipitate have been ordered. Which of the following does the medical clinician need to be aware of when ordering blood components? FFP will take 60 minutes to be available as it has to be thawed by the transfusion provider There may be delay in the issue of platelets due to availability, as the units will need to match the patient’s ABO group If platelets are clinically indicated the initial dose is suggested to be 2 adult therapeutic doses The initial replacement dose of FFP is suggested to be approximately 15 mL/kgone answer
