Yousef Abdul is a 61 year old man with severe intraoperative bleeding during a partial hepatectomy being performed in a major metropolitan hospital. He is coagulopathic (with PT 20 sec (11-14), APTT 45 sec (29-34), fibrinogen 1.4 g/L (2.0-4.0) and platelets 85 x 109/L). Blood components are available on site and fresh frozen plasma (FFP), platelets and cryoprecipitate have been ordered. Which of the following does the medical clinician need to be aware of when ordering blood components?
