There were a lot of cross-cultural misunderstandings that happened in Lia’s life before her catastrophic seizure that lead to her brain death that resulted in suffering for Lia, her family, and her health care team. Strife between health care providers and the Lee family lead to Lia being placed outside of her family home for a time where she did receive proper administration of medication to help prevent intense seizure activity. As we found out in chapter 17, Dr Hutchinson, “‘Lia’s brain was destroyed by septic shock'” (Fadiman, p.254, 1997). Ultimately, Dr. Hutchinson noted that the compliance of the Lee’s to Lia’s medication did not factor in except for the decrease in her white blood cell count from receiving Depakene. Because of Lia’s supportive and loving family her life was not ruined by her brain death. She is loved and cared for by her family to give her the best life possible. I would rather say that Lia’s life was COMPLICATED by cross-cultural misunderstandings.
