Joe is a 15-year-old patient in the surgical ward where you work. Joe was away on a school skiing trip when he had an accident and crashed into a tree, breaking both legs and his left arm. Both Joe’s parents are on a plane currently to the hospital where he is residing. Joe is scheduled for bone alignment surgery this afternoon, and his parents are scheduled to arrive in the evening. You walk into Joe’s room and see that he appears anxious. The following is the conversation between Joe and the nurse: Nurse: “Good afternoon, Joe; how are you feeling?” Joe: “Why do I have to be feeling anything?” Nurse: “Joe, you look like you might be anxious about the surgery. Can you tell me how you are feeling?” Joe: “I’m scared and frustrated. What happens if I lose my leg?” Nurse: “Can you tell me why you think you might lose your leg?” Joe: “Because my friend had an operation and he lost his leg, and I don’t want that to happen to me.” Nurse: “Don’t worry, son, you can’t lose your leg.” Joe: “How do you know I won’t lose my leg?” Nurse: “You’re right. I don’t know that I apologize for saying it. I’m just in a different space; I have personal stuff going on right now.” Joe: *Puzzled look on his face* “Do you think I will be able to ski again? I have a competition coming up next year.” Nurse: “That will have to be a discussion with the doctor after the surgery.” Joe: “Can you explain the surgery in detail to me” Nurse: “Sorry, Joe, that is not my job. Did the surgeon not explain it to you?” Joe: “What do you mean not your job?” Nurse: “I’m sorry, Joe, I should not have said that like that. Would you like me to get the surgeon to come and talk with you?” Joe: “Yes, that would be nice.” Nurse: “Well, I will page him right away. Is there anything else I can do for you?” Joe: “Yes, can you please let me know when my parents are going to be here?” Nurse: “I will look into that and let you know as soon as I find out anything.” The nurse paged the Doctor, and Joe is waiting for his arrival. this is my case study I need 2 effective and 4 ineffective communication techniques can you help
