what can you say about this statement I am currently working in a urology office and many of the patients are older males. A good portion of that patient population struggles to discuss what issue is bringing them into the office. It may be due to erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence, or urinary retention. Most of the time when I begin to start asking my assessment questions, they respond with “I was not raised to talk about things in front of ladies”. Now younger men who come in, generally do not have as hard of a time discussing those things. We are trained that if a patient comments as such, we are to state something along the lines of “I appreciate that, but I am here to assist you in getting the best care possible.” If they still do not want to continue to answer the questions we state, “That is no problem, I will notify the provider and they should be with you shortly.” We are not to push the patient to answer our questions but help to put them at ease and make them aware that we just want to provide the best experience and best outcomes possible.
