Please answer? A 9 month old infant boy is brought to the emergency room by his mother. She states that the child has been listless and hasn’t been interested in eating or taking his bottle for the past 2 days. She says the baby has been sleeping long hours and that she has difficulty waking him from his nap. The baby has had a low-grade fever, which she was treating with acetaminophen. While taking the medical history, the physician notes that the baby has not received any immunizations. A CBC and differential are performed, revealing a WBC of 14,500/ul with 90% neutrophils, including 35% bands. The infant’s condition worsens, and a cerebrospinal fluid collection is performed. The Gram stain reveals few gram-negative coccobacilli and 3 to 4 segmented neutrophils/oil immersion field. A tentative diagnosis of meningitis is made. 10.
