Efforts to address overdoses of pharmaceutical opioids is the state of Maryland’s attempt to curtail the over prescribing of pain medication by medical doctors. This initiative was developed to also inform medical practitioners about signs of abuse so that they may become a referral resource. I foresee some medical doctors, especially those that started “pain clinics”, a medical office developed solely to address pain needs of their clients, being resistant to this initiative because primarily these offices function of the sale of those medications and their services. These types of clinics are often shuddered by medical boards only to reopen later, in a different location with the same staff. This initiative focuses on data, data sharing, and data analysis. While important, the overuse of data can lead to over-analysis by policy-makers. This initiative would be better served if it included possible criminal charging directives that doctors could face if they are found to be maliciously over prescribing pain medication to their patients. Obviously, this determination would have to made by a medical board.
