You are the RN who has just been assigned to Cindy, a 20 year old Indigenous woman, who grew up in a remote community located in Moosonee in Northern Ontario, Canada. Both of her parents are present in her life, no siblings but a large network of community members with children. Cindy has recently moved to Toronto to attend college. Since moving, she has been experiencing racism, bullying and social isolation, often referred to derogatory names. Cindy is admitted to the psychiatric inpatient unit on a form 3 due to severe risk of bodily harm to self. You are the 5th nurse assigned to her in 48 hours due to her continuous refusal of care and unwillingness to speak to staff. When you enter the room, Cindy avoids eye contact, focusing on her fiddling hands and only responds using a simple yes or no. When you ask Cindy about her difficult transition, she begins to cry. As her nurse you feel empathy toward Cindy’s situation as you experienced something similar, moving a large distance to attend nursing school. You recognize the need to build rapport with Cindy in order to understand what is causing her distress, but you are unsure
