Risk Management Mr. Smith is a 73-year-old resident of the Golden Acres nursing facility. He was admitted three months ago because he was living alone and had a fall at home. He is in a private room near the exit at the end of the hall. He has diagnosis of mild dementia, end stage Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and diabetes mellitus. He is continent and ambulatory, but he experiences periods of shortness of breath frequently and uses oxygen by nasal cannula on 2 liters per minute most of the time. He used to smoke but was forced to quit upon his admission to the facility two months ago due to a campus wide non-smoking policy for all residents. Staff have recently found cigarettes and a lighter in his room, which he let them hold at the nurses’ station. He is a widower with three children, but has few visitors. His admission assessment, completed by the social worker, reveals a lonely, depressed, and angry man. He is responsible for his own finances and decision making at this time. His confusion is mild but has noticeably progressed since his admission. The nursing facility is located on the oceanfront with lovely views.
