in 50 words respond to the following discussion: The three most important characteristics of the nurse needed for an effective nurse-patient relationship are genuineness, empathy, and positive regard. First, genuineness can best be described as the nurse’s ability to be authentic in their interactions with patients. I believe this is important because the patient may only be willing to share their true feelings if they think the nurse is honest with them. A superficial relationship is bad for both the nurse and the patient because the nurse will not get the information they need for their assessment and the patient will not be getting the most out of their treatment. Next, I would describe empathy as putting yourself in the patient’s shoes. I think this is important for the relationship because it builds trust between the patient and the nurse and it shows the patient that we do care about them. Finally, positive regard is defined as “viewing another person as being worthy of caring about and as someone who has strengths and achievement potential” (Halter, 2022a). I believe this is essential to any nurse-patient relationship because it is one of our natural desires as human beings to be accepted. I believe that demonstrating positive regard will result in more patient engagement in our interviews. 2. I think my greatest strength in therapeutic communication is asking open-ended questions. I always try to begin a question with “describe” or “how” so that I get a response from the patient that is more than just a single word or two. I know that the purpose of patient interviews is to gather information needed for an assessment, and I make sure to remind myself of that as the interview goes on. I must gather insight into the patient’s true thoughts and feelings, and I would never accomplish that if I only asked closed-ended questions. 3. One area of therapeutic communication that I need to improve on is how I use silence during my interviews. I recognize that silence is often beneficial because it allows a moment for both the patient and nurse to reflect; however, I allow silence to go on for far too long. This can be harmful to the interview because it disrupts the natural flow of a conversation and makes the patient feel uncomfortable (Halter, 2022b). So far in the semester, we have only had one round of clinical and we have only conducted one MSE. For mine, I was interviewing a female patient in the youth unit. In between questions, I would try to gather my thoughts and figure out how to proceed in the interview. The silence between responses was awkward for me so I am sure the patient also felt uncomfortable. I made a comment to Instructor Baker that I felt as though the patient’s responses were almost robotic, and I am sure that my prolonged and frequent use of silence played a role in that.
