A 9-year-old girl visits the office for a routine 6-month appointment with the dental hygienist. She is epileptic and has a degree of gingival overgrowth evident in her mouth. She takes Carbamazepine (Tegretol) and is well controlled, having one seizure every 6 months or so. The soft tissues in several areas of her mouth are inflamed and sensitive to instrumentation. Her hands are tense and she is uncomfortable. Before you can apply any desensitizing agent to alleviate her discomfort, the patient makes a crying sound, her eyes roll up , and she arches her back, and becomes rigid. 1.
