reply to this Surgical patients are at risk of experiencing unintentional hypothermia related to a multitude of factors related to the operative environment including drugs, blood loss and exposure to cold environment temperatures. Hypothermia presents post operative complications for patients including infection, coagulation complications, decreased drug metabolization, prolonged recovery and extended hospital stays (Babiker,2022). Utilizing the use of electrical equipment such as a Bair hugger machine that circulates warm air into a disposable blanket, will help to maintain normothermia and prevent hypothermia and associated complications. It is recommended that hypothermia interventions begin 2 hours prior to anesthesia induction to reduce risk of hypothermia associated post-surgical complications. A study from 2021 reviewed a hospital that utilized the use of Bair huggers as a standard of care for preventing hypothermia in colorectal surgical patients. The study included 1,015 colorecta surgical patients and followed those patients for thirty days post op for surgical site infections and reported that only 10% (Fahim,2021). Formulating the conclusion that the use of hypothermia interventions such as a Bair hugger were effective in reducing pot operative complications such as surgical site infection.
