This situation would put me in a huge moral dilemma. I would be conflicted between choosing my own life, or saving the lives of a bunch of criminals. I’ve always thought that criminals are not always bad people. One can become a criminal from stealing an apple to feed his starving child. Morally, is he a criminal? A crime is a crime but it doesn’t mean he was wrong. On the other hand, who is to say that those on the innocent boat are actually innocent? Perhaps, they just haven’t been caught. That is where my mind would go in a short amount of time. As a passenger on the “innocent” boat, I would chose to remove myself. I would evacuate myself and not make a choice at all. If another member of the innocent boat would push the button to detonate the criminals boat, I would wonder if they were doing it in a selfish way (they just wanted to live themselves), or if their thinking was to save the morally right citizens. Either way, their character would be one which can live knowing a boat full of citizens died under their hand. I do not think pushing the button would be morally right. Although we are not speaking about patients, non- maleficence is the ethical principle I side with. Basil Varkey(2020)”…do not kill, do not cause pain or suffering…” I need a discussion response on this.
