This week we are putting our coding skills into practice by doing a capstone into diagnostic coding. Let’s start the week by reviewing the guidelines on coding the principal diagnosis. Locate the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting (OGCR) 2021 ICD-10-CM OGCR Download 2021 ICD-10-CM OGCR Study section (II) regarding the selection of Principal Diagnosis. Pick a guideline and review the documentation on it. Discuss in your own words which guideline you selected and why it seems essential to you. Explain its use and why you think there is a need for this guideline to determine a principal diagnosis. Be sure to provide an example of your own of where it is used (you may need to consult the codebook).
