Although health information technology (HIT) has many proven benefits, some studies have also found that implementing HIT in clinical settings can have some unexpected and harmful effects, such as adverse patient outcomes, patient safety risks, and patient harm. Other negative outcomes include clinicians’ burnout, stress related to HIT, dissatisfaction with HIT, inclination to reduce clinical working hours, and quitting job or leaving current practice (Jouparinejad et al., 2020). Researchers highlighted that nurses with low nursing informatics (NI) competency were more likely to experience negative effects of HIT on patient care (Jouparinejad et al., 2020). Therefore, nurses must have NI skills and knowledge for safe and effective care.
