Assume that you are an infection preventionist (IP) in a critical access hospital. In the past two days, you have noticed an increase in the number of pediatric patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) with gastrointestinal (GI) illness. Upon closer inspection, most of the patients are associated with a K-12 center in the community, and due to the volume of cases, you suspect norovirus. Therefore, you want to give some IPC recommendations to your staff, especially those in the ED. What type of precautions should they be using for patients demonstrating GI illness? What about for patients that do not present with acute illness, but inform you that they work at that K-12 center and/or they have been exposed via their child(ren)?
