While bullying, incivility, and workplace violence affect workers in all occupations, it is thought to be especially prevalent in nursing due to occupational characteristics including, but not limited to, long hours, shift work, short-staffing, frequent contact with illness and death, and the lack of human resources, material, and equipment. Workplace violence can be classified according to its structure as either lateral (also called horizontal) or vertical violence. 1. Discuss characteristics of workplace bullying in nursing and include incivility, vertical violence, and lateral or horizontal violence. 2. Research how these acts of violence affect the nursing profession. Include nursing burnout and why these acts result in nurses leaving the profession.
