Mary M., a 63-year-old female, is brought to her local Emergency Department with symptoms of visual disturbances, severe headache, dizziness, and left sided muscle paralysis. She is admitted with a diagnosis of possible stroke. Her daughter reports that Mary has a history of hypertension and was previously hospitalized for Transient Ischemic Attacks (TIA’s). She is alert but lethargic. Her right pupil is larger than her left pupil. She is oriented to person, place, and the month of the year. She demonstrates left sided weakness, but is able to follow simple commands and move all extremities. Diagnostic tests performed in the emergency department include CT scan of the head; electrocardiogram; and laboratory, including CBC, chemistry profile, and coagulation profile.
