MT is a 58-year old woman who was recently discharged from the hospital, where she was admitted for a stroke. Today, she has come to the Neurology Clinic for a follow up visit. Based on her medical records, this was her second stroke. The first one was over 10 years ago, and the last one was 2 months ago. Her main concern is “I am having trouble speaking and swallowing.” She states that her tongue seems to be in the way. Initially after her most-recent hospital stay, MT had made a full recovery with a slight loss of sensation to the right side of her face. MT is an 11th grade teacher, and this speech defect can have a big impact on her ability to teach. This has been worrying MT and has been causing problems with her ability to sleep. She states that she feels anxious about this and is visibly tired.
