A 21-year-old female arrives in the Emergency Department with a severe case of diarrhea. She returned from Mexico the day before her ED visit. The day before that she had an acute onset of profuse watery diarrhea with no blood or mucus in her stool. She had not experienced a fever, chills, nausea, or vomiting. She is otherwise healthy and takes no medications. Physical examination is remarkable for diffuse, mild abdominal tenderness to palpation. Her stool is guaiac negative.
