Pericarditis
Pericarditis is the swelling and inflammation of the sac-like tissue surrounding the heart, the pericardium.
Etiology – The cause is unknown. However, most commonly found due to a viral infection that attacks the heart. Other causes of pericarditis include bacterial, fungal, and other infections, heart attack or heart surgery, other medical conditions, injuries, and medications. Pericarditis can be acute (happens suddenly) or chronic (happens over time) in nature. In any case, it disrupts the heart’s normal function and, in rare cases, can have grave consequences, including abnormal heart rhythm and death.
Modifiable factors – Since the cause is unknown, pericarditis does not have any known modifiable factors.
Non-modifiable factors – Pericarditis is more common in men than women, and younger (age 20-40) men are more likely to become infected than older men are.
You are also at higher risk if you’ve had a heart attack, heart surgery, kidney failure, cancer, and tuberculosis.
Other risk factors are – people with rapid and heavy breathing, who suffer from breathlessness, who have a frequent dry cough, someone who gets ill often, people with body temperature abnormalities, those with broken blood vessels in the mucous membrane lining the lungs and eyes, those with immunity disorders, those with AIDS or HIV, those who have had previous radiation therapy to the chest, if you’ve ever had rheumatic fever, and those with hypothyroidism or under-active thyroid glands.
