Each of the scenarios in the following table provides an example of different developmental theory and/or term in practice. Thc first cxamplc is providcd for you. For each scenario: i. Identify the reason why the scenario demonstrates the indicated theory/term. ii. Suggest an experience that you could plan to support the child’s development in this area. Scenario Grace (2 years, 4 months) is becoming a very independent toddler. She likes to feed herself, is very determined about ‘helping’ to dress herself and becomes frustrated if Educators try to direct her play. Grace puts her head down if she is spoken to in a stern voice. Theory/Term Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory Reason Grace’s behaviour is typical of Erikson’s second stage: autonomy V’s shame and doubt. She is struggling to become independent and does not like to be corrected by the Educator. Experience to support Child Provide Grace with opportunities throughout the day to use her independence e.g. Serve finger foods that she can manage by herself; encourage Grace to help at nappy change by talking through the process and getting her to pass nappy/cream etc. Scenario Theory/ Reason Experience to support Term Child Harry (4 years 5 months) loves to build with the blocks, he often has a specific plan in mind. He is well liked by the other children and is a natural leader. Harry announces to his friends that he is going to build a submarine and then proceeds to organise the other children to help complete the project. Sometimes Harry becomes too bossy and needs to be reminded that others have a right to play in the block area. Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory Ziggy (9 months) is accomplished at crawling and is beginning to pull herself up to standing position holding onto furniture. She is skilled at reaching and grasping objects which she always places in her mouth. Piaget’s Sensorimotor Stage Chen (4 years 10 months) is attempting a difficult puzzle with the assistance of an Educator. She is able to put some pieces in by herself but needs to be guided by the Educator in order to complete the puzzle. Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development – Scaffolding
