Viola Montoya is a 69 y/o woman who lives at one of the local extended care facility in your community. Mrs. Montoya has a history of dementia, NIDDM and osteoporosis. At 0200, Mrs. Montoya was found on the floor beside her bed by one of the HCA’s in the extended care facility. While there was no obvious signs of injuries noted by staff, Mrs. Montoya was transferred to the ER for assessment as she was complaining of right hip pain. Diagnostic tests revealed a fractured right hip. Within an hour from admission to ER, a large hematoma on the back of her head was present. Mrs. Montoya has no family in town but her son plans to fly from Montreal to visit her. The surgeon has put Mrs. Montoya on the OR slate for this afternoon to stabilize her hip fracture.
