Video clip 1: Legibly print notes (anything that you think is important to note or remember). “Larry” is your ‘patient’. The scene (and your assessment) starts with the doctor present. Describe what you observe. Use an organized format: ABC’s (Appearance, Behavior, Cognition, Speech, Mood/Affect and general presentation). For this first clip, focus on the A & B especially. Be as descriptive as possible. “Paint the picture” so that you can vividly recall this patient in the future and/ or a colleague can clearly envision and understand this patient’s presentation. It is better to be overly detailed now and work on picking relevant data later. Think of this exercise “as if” a provider will be asking you for a verbal report. You will be graded on quality effort. I expect as we proceed in the next clips that you will improve in the level of detail and accuracy of MSE elements and organization.

Watch the clip only once (Do not pause or repeat video clip; the exercise is to help you practice ‘as if’ you are assessing the person in real time; try to practice focused attention for later documentation).
