The neonatal period extends from birth to the first 28 days after birth. During this period the neonate will make some adjustments from an intrauterine to an extrauterine life. The nursing professional needs to have knowledge about the normal bio-psycho-social adjustments, in order to be able to identify their alterations. Starting life as a human being, he has to immediately establish a respiratory pattern along with the circulatory one. These radical and rapid changes are necessary and crucial for the maintenance of life. In addition to these physiological tasks are: ingestion, retention, digestion of nutrients, elimination of waste production, regulation of temperature and weight. Through this guide the student will be able to know, understand and carry out a comprehensive nursing care from the estimation of the possible problems that the normal newborn may experience in his adjustments to an extrauterine life.
