SOLVED7
You have been learning about social inequalities and social institutions. Considering what you have learned, please respond to the ethical scenario below and advise what you would do if you were in the situation. Please respond to the following prompts after you read the scenario below.   Â
Think about what you would do in this situation.
List and explain each of your options and their pros and cons.
Then, describe what you would do if you were in the situation and explain your decision entirely.
Scenario
You are a healthcare worker in a large hospital and have been on the job for 5 years. You really like your job, and you hope to move up the ladder over the next few years when you complete your current degree. The hospital you work for employs hundreds of workers, but only a few select people can access the medication storage room. You have access to the room because of your responsibility of dispensing medication to patients on your floor.Â
A friend of yours who also works at the hospital asks you if you can get them a few painkillers to get them through their shift. You know that they have been prescribed pain medication in the past for a car accident that resulted in back problems. Your friend has only been on the job for 60 days and is still in their probationary period; therefore, they cannot take time off with pay. Their family relies on them to pay rent and food. All the other members of their family are currently out of work.
You know that you are not supposed to give your co-worker any medication, but they are in a pinch and will not be able to finish their shift without it. You have been friends for over 10 years, and you understand their family situation. Your friend does not seem to be a person that would abuse medication.Â

In this scenario, I am faced with a difficult ethical dilemma regarding providing medication to a friend who is in need but not authorized to access the medication themselves. We have been friends since a young age, and I know her family and medical situation. Also, I know she has only been on the job for 60 days and cannot take time off. Â But I have been working at this large hospital for 5 years and I enjoy my job. My plan is to move up in the upcoming years. I will explore three options and their pros and cons and discuss which option I chose and why.
Â
Option 1: Provide the medication to your friend.
Pros: You help your friend in a time of need, potentially preventing them from experiencing unnecessary pain or distress during their shift. Your friend’s ability to work and provide for their family is supported, which may alleviate financial strain.
Cons: You would be violating hospital policies and potentially putting your job and professional reputation at risk. Providing medication without proper authorization or oversight could have legal implications and jeopardize patient safety. This action may set a precedent for similar requests from other coworkers, leading to ethical and legal complications.
Option 2: Decline to provide the medication and suggest alternative solutions.
Pros: Upholds professional integrity and adherence to hospital policies and ethical standards. Protects patient safety and maintains the integrity of the healthcare system. Encourage your friend to explore alternative options for managing their pain and addressing their family’s financial needs.
Cons: Your friend may experience continued discomfort or distress during their shift if unable to access medication. Your relationship with your friend may be strained if they perceive your refusal as unsupportive or uncaring. Your friend’s financial situation and family responsibilities may remain unaddressed in the short term.
Option 3: Seek guidance from a supervisor or ethics committee.
Pros: Assures adherence to organizational norms and procedures and involves the relevant stakeholders in the resolution of the ethical challenge. Makes it possible to evaluate the situation more objectively and take any implications into account. Shows a dedication to making moral decisions and acting openly when dealing with difficult situations.
Cons: This choice might make it take longer to attend to an urgent situation, which could make your friend feel even more distressed. If your friend is brought before higher authorities, they can get awkward or ashamed. Getting advice from ethics committees or supervisors may cause logistical difficulties or take longer than expected.
If I were in this situation, I would choose option 2: Decline to provide the medication and suggest alternative solutions. While I empathize with my friend’s predicament and desire to help them, it is essential to prioritize patient safety, uphold professional integrity, and adhere to hospital policies and ethical standards. I would explain to my friend the reasons for my decision and offer to support them in exploring alternative options for managing their pain and addressing their family’s financial needs. Furthermore, I would advise them to look for advice from the proper hospital departments, such their supervisor or human resources, in order to investigate any possible accommodations or support services that might be made available to them during their probationary term. By selecting this course of action, I hope to preserve ethical standards and my obligations as a healthcare provider, all the while preserving integrity and trust in my personal and professional relationships.
