Chief Complaint: facial flushing HPI: J. M. is an 85-year-old male new patient referred by his primary care provider to the endocrinology clinic for evaluation of facial flushing that has been going on for a number of months. He has a past medical history of chronic anemia, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and sleep apnea. He reports the flushing is happening predominantly during the night, although it occasionally occurs to a lesser degree during the day. He does not believe it is provoked by physical activity. It most often occurs after he lies down at night and can happen a few times throughout the night. When symptoms occur, he feels like his face is flushed and warm and often also experiences a headache. He reports he does not usually perspire when this is happening, but he occasionally has palpitations. Sometimes symptoms can be provoked by standing up after he has been lying down, although other times the flushing occurs when he has been lying still for quite some time. He denies any recent change in bowel habits and has not started any new medications or supplements since well before the flushing started. He denies any head trauma. Past Medical History: anemia,
