For my capstone project, I implemented an education-based strategy by way of an in-service for nursing staff at my rehabilitation hospital to identify the signs of an infection in hemodialysis patients’ fistula or catheter sites. My short-term goal for this project was to implement an education-based strategy by way of an in-service geared towards the floor nursing staff where I along with the nurse educator present the signs of infection in AVF and CVC hemodialysis access sites. My desired short-term outcome is that the floor nursing staff (RNs and LPNs) will display an increased knowledge in identifying infections in dialysis patients’ AVFs and CVCs. My desired long-term outcome is that we are able to prevent dialysis patients from being sent out of our facility to the hospital as a result of infections in their AVFs and CVCs. This will be beneficial for the patients and staff since patient rehabilitation services will not be interrupted due to these infections. The process by which I implemented my change strategy was through two education-based in-services, one for a group of day shift nurses and one for a group of night shift nurses.
