In this situation I would use the L.E.A.R.N method stated in the book on pages 52-53. With this method I would listen, evaluate, understand, and negiotitae a plan of care for the patient. Since the family (the mother) is highly involved in her minor child healthcare plan, it might be hard for the nurse to ask the patient who else should be involved in the decision making of her health plan. I would explain to the mother how harmful this can be to her child and how the surgey will relieve the pain that her daughter is in from the gallstones. I would advocate for the patient as much as I can without feeling like I am overstepping or making the mother feel uncomfortable or upset enough to leave against medical advice because I wouldn’t want the condition to get worse after they leave.
