A 55 year old white female presents to the office with complaints of heartburn which she has been treated with OTC Prilosec. She reports that when she eats before going to bed, she wakes up in a few hours with “terrible pains in her throat”. She states that she notices when she eats pizza and drinks beer, it seems to be worse. She felt reassured because the pain didn’t last long but it is recurrent. She has not been to see her primary care provider for 7 years. Current meds: Prilosec OTC daily, TUMS PRN. Her exam was essentially normal and her vital signs were normal. She is diagnosed with GERD today by the CRNP. 1. Describe the pathophysiology of GERD as well as signs and symptoms of the disease. 2.
