Illnesses are hard on not only the patient, but the family members of the patient as well and cause immense stress leading to strong emotions. Mrs. Thomas is a victim of this and is ultimately just wanting the best care for her husband, which is why I would sympathize with her and let her catch her breath before starting the conversation. In the textbook it talks about how downcast eyes are an obvious sign of nonverbal communication, and Mr. Thomas is the patient in this scenario, not his wife. It is very important to hear all concerns, but the patient is the one who is receiving the care and needs to be listened to and supported. Starting by addressing Mrs. Thomas’ concerns, I would then turn to Mr. Thomas and ask him what concerns he has. Mr. Thomas seems very uncomfortable is this situation wanting to trust what the doctor says, but also wanting to make sure his wife is happy with the care as well.
