The process of assessing older adults can create a number of very challenging ethical dilemmas for social workers. Refer to the Code of Ethics of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) as you think about and discuss one the following ethical dilemmas: An older adult does not want her adult children to know how much difficulty she has with financial issues because she does not think it is any of their business. Her finances are a mess, but she begs you not to tell her children. Family members of an older man do not want him to know that his doctor has diagnosed him with late-stage prostate cancer and that they plan to start hospice care immediately following your assessment. Does he have to be told? You are making a home visit with an older adult with mild dementia when she tells you that she suspects her health-care aide of stealing money from her. She has no family to take care of her and asks that you not contact the police or talk to the home health aide. What do you do?
