SOLVED1432
A 68-year-old male is in the physician’s office because of continuing joint pain in the left knee. The client states that he can bathe himself as long as he sits down to bathe but that he cannot climb into the bathtub. The spouse has placed a chair in the bathroom for use during bathing. The client has no difficulties with toileting, dressing, or eating, but he gets “tired and sore” if he walks more than a block. The client is a retired postal worker and enjoys spending time in the flower garden. Lately the knee pain has kept him from gardening. When assessing the knee joints, the nurse finds stiffness in the left knee (especially after walking), swelling, and pain with motion. The joints are not warm, red, or tender. The right knee is unaffected. The client walks with a limp, favoring the left knee, and reaches for the table to stabilize himself. He rates the pain level as a “6” on a scale of 1 to 10. Temperature is 98.3° F (36.8° C), and the client denies weight loss or general weakness.
