Client brought to the emergency department (ED) by ambulance following a house fire. Total body surface area burned is 27% (back of torso and back of each arm). Second-degree burns are present on the arms, and second-degree burns with several patches of third-degree burns are on the back. Indwelling urinary catheter was inserted, and a central venous access was initiated in the right internal jugular vein. Weight is 168 lb. (76.2 kg). Using the American Burn Association (ABA) consensus formula, the client is to receive 4,115 ml lactated Ringer’s solution over 24 hours. Radial pulses are weak, but pedal pulses are strong. Hands are edematous, and nail beds have slow capillary refill. Lungs are clear, with no dyspnea or stridor noted. Oriented to person, but confused to the time and events. Client reports pain as “severe,” but is unable to assign a number for pain. Assessment Findings: Core body temperature of 97 degrees F.
