SOLVED1222
Based on the scenario, my approach as a nurse would be to create a safe environment for the patient. With a patient who is suicidal and crying uncontrollably, the best thing you can do for the patient is to let them know that you are there to help but also provide them with space and privacy to finish crying. In most cases, when it comes to mental health, the best therapeutic response is silence and an ear to listen to them if that is what they need at the moment. You want to let the patient feel you are there for support and allow them to come to you. Most suicidal patients will not respond to you during the first interaction, but if you enter the room with respect, genuineness, trust, and confidentiality, the patient will come to you (Sheldon & Foust, 2013). As a nurse, my priority would be the patient’s safety. With that being said, I would create a safe environment for the patient by making sure there is nothing in the room that can be used for self-harm. The best thing you can do in a situation like this is to read the room and the patient.
