Scenario You are working in a SNF and one of your patients is Mary, is a 76-year old female who has just had a total hip replacement. Mary lives with her 80-year old husband in a single story home. Although able to care for himself, her husband is frail and will be unable to provide much assistant to Mary. They have no children or other family in the area. Prior to this surgery Mary was responsible for all cooking and cleaning tasks in the home. The long-term goal is for Mary to return home, independent in all self-care. Initially she will be unable to do all of the cooking and cleaning but will be able to do some of these tasks. Estimated length of stay is two weeks. Initial status: Mary can wash her face and upper body, brush her teeth, and comb her hair if she is set up in her wheelchair at the sink. She is independent with upper body dressing. She does not know hip precautions. She transfers with minimal assist from bed to wheelchair but needs moderate assist with transfers in the shower and toilet.
