Assume the role of a Human Services caseworker and discuss the options offered in this post “I am a social worker at Hope Hospital in Los Angeles, currently seeing a 13-year-old patient named Helena. This is Helena’s second hospitalization due to dehydration and her parents, Leigh and Dean have expressed concerns that she may have an eating disorder. They report significant changes in her eating habits, often refusing to eat saying that she had a big lunch at school or that she has eaten while Leigh and Dean are at work or running errands. They also report that she expresses body image concerns and has lost a lot of weight. Helena’s weight is below the healthy range for her height and age. After speaking with Helena, she exhibits some anxiety and obsessive thoughts related to food and body image. She reports coping with this by restricting her food intake and exercising frequently. I have scheduled a meeting with Helena’s parents tomorrow to provide education and treatment recommendations. I will begin by providing information on the two most common eating disorders. I will explain that people with anorexia nervosa often have a distorted view of their body and have an irrational fear of gaining weight or believe they are overweight, even if they are very thin. Bulimia nervosa is characterized by episodes of binge eating and after bingeing, inducing vomit, taking laxatives, avoiding eating altogether or intense exercise (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2010). Both disorders primarily affect adolescent females and may cause numerous serious and even life-threatening complications. Based on my conversations with Helena and her parents, I believe she may be suffering from anorexia nervosa. My advice to Leigh and Dean is to is to seek treatment for Helena immediately. I will refer them to Eating Disorder Therapy LA at (323) 743-1122, which provides outpatient treatment for eating disorders, treating patients of all ages. Helena will also be referred to a dietician and to her primary care physician for continued follow up. I recommend all family members join an eating disorder support group. The Eating Disorder Foundation offers online support groups for patients, family members and friends of individuals struggling or in recovery from an eating disorder. A link to their website, https://eatingdisorderfoundation.org/get-help/support-groups/support-group-schedule/Links to an external site. will be provided to Leigh and Dean.”
